Ready to Reset Your Career This September? Here’s My Go-To Framework to Refocus, Re-energise & Rebuild Motivation

There’s something about September.

Maybe it’s the back-to-school energy.

Maybe it’s the return of routine.

Or maybe it’s just that natural sense of a fresh start, the feeling that you’re stepping into a new season.

Whatever the reason, September has always felt like my time to reset.

The holidays wind down.

Work picks back up.

And suddenly, there’s a pull to get focused again… but not just for the sake of doing more.

It’s about getting intentional.

Tuning into what actually matters.

And reconnecting with yourself and your goals, before the year runs away with you.

Why “starting again” isn’t just about setting goals

So many of the clients I work with arrive in September with a clear intention:

👉 “I want to make a move before the end of the year.”

👉 “I want to feel excited about work again.”

👉 “I want to stop going through the motions.”

But after a busy summer or a period of rest, getting back into gear can feel clunky.

Motivation is patchy. Focus is fuzzy. And self-doubt starts creeping in.

That’s why I don’t start with to-do lists or big goals.

Instead, I return to something simple, grounding, and personal - REFRESH framework. A framework I learned many years ago from a very wise man - Liam Moggan, coach to coaches in the sporting world!

The REFRESH Framework: My Go-To for Resetting Motivation

Over the years, this little acronym has become a powerful check-in tool, especially when I’m feeling a dip in motivation, coming back from a break, or starting something new in my own career or business.

Here’s what it stands for:

R - Rest

Not just sleep, but real, intentional pauses. Time away from your screen. A slower morning. A walk without your phone.

Because clarity doesn’t come when your brain is constantly “on.”

E - Exercise

It’s not about perfection or intense plans, it’s about movement. Regular movement keeps your energy steady and your mindset sharp, especially when tackling big decisions.

F - Family & Friends

Connection matters. If you’ve felt stuck in your own head lately, make time for the people who remind you who you are outside of your job title.

R - Random Acts of Kindness

Kindness gets you out of your bubble. It might be a small message to check in on someone, a compliment, or a favour, but it brings perspective and purpose back into focus.

E - Eat

Fuel matters. You wouldn’t drive across the country on an empty tank, why expect your mind to perform when your body isn’t fuelled?

S - Sleep

It’s basic but powerful. Lack of sleep clouds clarity, stirs self-doubt, and increases overwhelm. Prioritise proper rest, not just more hours, but better quality.

H - Humour

Laughter lifts heaviness. The job hunt, career confusion or navigating workplace change can all feel weighty. Humour brings relief, perspective and joy, don’t underestimate it.

September is Your Reset Season

If you’ve felt like your career energy has been low lately, whether it’s because of burnout, boredom or just the natural pause of summer - you just need a reset.

And that reset doesn’t start with rewriting your CV or setting 10 goals.

It starts with getting your energy right.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s made me feel energised lately?

  • Where have I felt most disconnected or flat?

  • What small changes could make a big difference in my day-to-day?

You don’t need a complete career overhaul to feel more motivated, you just need to reconnect with the version of you who feels present, purposeful, and awake again.
