Navigating Career Hurdles

In life, we often encounter hurdles that we must overcome to achieve our goals.

The same is true of our careers. If we’re looking for a fulfilling and successful career we are bound to encounter speed bumps along the way.

Whether it's facing rejection, dealing with job loss, struggling with self-doubt, or encountering unexpected roadblocks, these challenges can be daunting.

Any of these obstacles can be paralysing. They lock some of us into a lifetime of frustration, lack of satisfaction, or just plain misery.

Think about the last time you felt frustrated by your job. What was that obstacle that most prevented you from moving forward?

There is little doubt that the most overlooked answer to that question may also be the toughest to challenge for most of us.

That answer is ‘ourselves.’

Obstacles are an inevitable part of any journey, and they present valuable opportunities for growth and learning.

This month, I’m exploring some practical ways you can prepare yourself for the next hurdle you may encounter.

Big career decisions don’t come with a map, but all you need is a compass. In an unpredictable world, you can’t make a master plan. You can only gauge whether you’re on a meaningful path. The right next move is the one that brings you a step closer to living your core values.

Stay open minded and eager to learn and grow

One of the most powerful tools in overcoming career obstacles is being open minded and eager to learn and grow – often called cultivating a growth mindset.

Challenges and setbacks are not indicators of your worth or potential. Instead, view them as opportunities for learning and improvement.

When presented with a challenge, an individual with a growth mindset doesn’t see it as a chance to fail, but rather, as an opportunity to grow.

Embrace the belief that with effort, dedication, and a willingness to learn from your experiences, you can overcome any hurdle and continue moving forward in your career.

Success is not final; failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.
— Winston Churchill

Get organised and focus on what truly matters to you

When faced with obstacles, try to stay focused on your long-term career goals.

Take some time to reassess and refine your objectives, breaking them down into smaller, manageable ‘bite size’ chunks.

Prioritise these steps based on their importance and impact, and create an action plan to tackle them systematically.

Having a clear roadmap will give you a sense of direction and purpose, even when facing challenges.

Ask for help if you need it

Don't be afraid to seek support during difficult times.

Reach out to mentors, career coaches, or trusted colleagues who can provide guidance and perspective.

Even engaging with someone who has ‘been there’ and experienced similar obstacles can help you gain valuable insights and motivation. And help you feel less isolated.

Additionally, joining professional networks or online communities can offer a supportive environment where you can share experiences and receive encouragement.

Bounce back

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a positive outlook despite challenges.

Cultivate resilience by practicing self-care, mindfulness, and stress-management techniques.

Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and setting aside time for hobbies can enhance your ability to cope with adversity effectively.

I know that’s sometimes easier said than done, especially with so many demands on our time but it’s worth ‘putting your own oxygen mask’ on first and attending to your own needs so that you can continue to cope with what life throws at you.

Turn mistakes into valuable lessons for the future

Every obstacle holds lessons to be learned.

Reflect on the challenges you encounter and identify the skills or knowledge you need to develop.

Analyse what worked and what didn't in previous attempts, and use this knowledge to adapt your approach.

Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and improvement to turn setbacks into stepping stones towards success.

Meet new people and build your community

Building a strong professional network can be invaluable when overcoming career obstacles.

Networking can lead to new opportunities, collaborations, and support during challenging times.

Attend industry events, connect with like-minded individuals on social media platforms, and participate in online forums to expand your network and increase your chances of finding solutions to your career challenges.

Overcoming career obstacles is a natural part of the journey towards success.

By embracing a growth mindset, setting clear goals, seeking support, developing resilience, and learning from setbacks, you can navigate your path with determination and confidence.

Each obstacle is an opportunity for growth and improvement, and by facing them head-on, you'll emerge stronger and more equipped to achieve your professional aspirations.

So, embrace the challenges, stay persistent, and believe in your ability to conquer any obstacle that comes your way. Your career success awaits!
