In today's competitive job market, landing your dream job often hinges on acing the interview.

I’ve supported a lot of my clients with Interview Preparation and thankfully a number of them have been successful.

As part of this process I've witnessed first-hand the power of preparation and confidence in interview scenarios.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or fresh out of college, mastering the art of the interview can significantly boost your chances of securing employment.

If you’ve got a big interview coming up, this is your chance to put your best foot forward and make a lasting impression.

To do that you need to implement a strategy.

My Interview Strategy is - The 3 P’s: Prepare, Practice, and Perform.
— Joanne Lee, Career Coach

Prepare:

First things first, do your homework! Research the company, understand its culture, values, and mission.

Tailor your answers to demonstrate how you align with these values. This knowledge not only demonstrates your genuine interest but also equips you to tailor your responses to align with the company's goals and values.

Study the job description, have lots of real examples that show your level of proficiency in each competency and which make you the perfect fit. The more you prepare the more confident you will feel.

Practice:

Practice makes perfect. Create a list of common interview questions and practice your responses. Practice interview questions with a friend, family member, or even in front of a mirror. This will help you articulate your thoughts clearly and concisely, while also allowing you to refine your answers based on feedback.

Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. This framework helps you be as succinct as possible in answering questions and also gives the interviewers a great sense of what you’ve done and the impact you made.

The more you practice, the more polished and confident you’ll appear during the real interview. Don’t let the interview be the first time you’re speaking your answers out loud!

Perform:

The day of the interview has arrived. Your interview may be face to face or virtual so prepare for all eventualities (like making sure you arrive in plenty of time and double check your technology if its virtual). In some roles you may end up having 2 or 3 interviews with some being virtual and others in person.

Project confidence, maintain eye contact, and speak clearly. Listen actively and ask thoughtful questions to show your interest. Remember, it’s not just about showcasing your skills; it’s about demonstrating your fit with the company culture and your enthusiasm for the role.

One tip I always give my clients is to have a brief opening and closing statement ready. This will make you stand out from the crowd and gives you the perfect opportunity to close the interview by reminding them of at least three reasons why they should hire you for the role.

None of us like pitching or selling ourselves but if we understand that an interview is like a performance then we need to give it our all and leave nothing on the table!

Here are some additional expert tips to help you shine during your next interview:

  1. Showcase Your Achievements: Instead of simply listing your job responsibilities, highlight your achievements and the impact you've made in your previous roles. Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and expertise, and quantify your achievements whenever possible. Employers are not just looking for qualifications; they want to see tangible results.

  2. Master the Art of Storytelling: Craft compelling stories that showcase your strengths, experiences, and problem-solving abilities using real-life examples. The STAR method can help you have a good start, middle and end to your story.

  3. Dress for Success: Your appearance sets the tone for the interview and speaks volumes about your professionalism, whether that’s for an in-person or virtual interview. Dress appropriately for the company culture, opting for clean, well-fitted attire that reflects your confidence and respect for the opportunity.

  4. Be Authentic: While it's essential to prepare and present yourself in the best possible light, authenticity is equally crucial. Be genuine, honest, and transparent throughout the interview process. Employers appreciate candidates who are authentic and self-aware, as it fosters trust and rapport.

  5. Mind Your Body Language: Nonverbal cues play a significant role in communication, so pay attention to your body language during the interview. Maintain eye contact, sit up straight, and avoid fidgeting or crossing your arms, as these behaviours can convey nervousness or disinterest.

  6. Follow Up: Don't underestimate the power of a thoughtful follow-up email or thank-you note. Express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview and reiterate your interest in the position. Personalise your message based on your conversation during the interview to leave a memorable impression.

Whether you receive an offer or not, view every interview as a learning opportunity. Reflect on your performance, identify areas for improvement, and apply these insights to future interviews. If possible ask for feedback from the Recruiter or Hiring Manager so you can refine your answers for next time.

Continuous growth and refinement are key to mastering the interview process.

By implementing these expert tips and strategies, you can approach interviews with confidence, poise, and a competitive edge. Remember The 3P’s are the pillars of interview success. With the right mindset and preparation, you can turn any interview into an opportunity to showcase your talents and land your dream job.
