Feeling Lost After a Restructure, Redundancy or Stalled Promotion? Here’s How to Reflect, Recharge & Regain Career Clarity

Right now, I’m writing this blog in advance so I can take over a month off this summer.

Why? Because rest and reflection aren’t luxuries, they’re essential.

It’s how I keep showing up at my best for my clients. And it’s the same advice I give to the ambitious professionals I work with every day:

You don’t get clarity by pushing through. You get clarity by pausing to reflect, recalibrate, and then move forward with purpose.

So if you’re in the middle of a career crossroads, whether that’s the aftermath of a restructure, redundancy, or just a nagging sense that your current role isn’t it anymore, this is your moment to pause with intention.

Let’s talk about how.

Step One: Reflect on What’s Gone Well and What Hasn’t

The first half of the year might have brought surprises, challenges, or even big changes to your role or team structure. Maybe promotion doors have closed. Maybe you're questioning what's next.

But before you look ahead, take stock.

Ask yourself:

  • What projects gave me energy? What drained me?

  • What feedback did I receive that I brushed aside?

  • When did I feel most proud of the work I did?

These are the kind of questions I help my clients explore in our sessions, not just at surface level, but with honest reflection and strategic curiosity. Because without clarity on what’s actually working for you, it’s impossible to build a path that feels right.

Step Two: Acknowledge Change, Even When It Wasn’t Your Choice

Redundancy. Restructuring. Roles being put “on hold.”

These things can rattle even the most confident professional. But they don’t have to define your next move.

But it’s important to acknowledge & accept the current situation.

I often work with high-performing clients who’ve spent years doing excellent work, but find themselves unsure how to tell their story, reposition their strengths, or decide where to go next when the external landscape shifts.

That’s where my coaching experience comes in. I help clients:

  • Rebuild confidence after redundancy

  • Get clear on what actually matters in their career now

  • Identify opportunities they wouldn’t have considered before

Because when you’re in it, it’s hard to see the bigger picture. I bring the perspective, structure and deep career expertise that helps you get out of your head and into action.

Step Three: Recharge Properly

Not every break is restorative. If your mind is constantly spinning with “what next?” or you’re doom-scrolling job ads, you’re not actually resting.

I always encourage clients to carve out guilt-free space to rest to switch off, breathe, walk, read, connect with the part of themselves that isn’t just a job title.

Because when you come back, you want to return refreshed, not just relieved that the break is over.

Step Four: Recalibrate, Then Plan for the Rest of the Year

Late August and early September are the perfect time to do a personal end-of-summer review.

Try this:

  • Write down what’s gone well so far this year.

  • Track your progress (even if it’s small wins).

  • Name what you’re grateful for.

  • Set 1–3 career goals from now until December.

But here’s the key: don’t just set goals based on where you think you should go. Base them on what energises you, what you want your day-to-day life to look like, and what you want to be known for.

That’s exactly what I help my clients do, we map it all out clearly:

✔️ What are your strengths?

✔️ What roles align with your values, lifestyle and long-term goals?

✔️ What needs to change and how do you start that shift now?

You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

It’s all well and good me giving you questions to reflect on and telling you what to do…

But the truth is - actually doing it, and doing it in depth, is another story.

You can read all the blogs, write all the lists, even map out a plan, but without the right support, it’s easy to stay stuck in the same cycle of overthinking, second-guessing, and not moving forward.

I get it & I have seen it happen so much over the last 30 years in senior leadership & communications roles.

That’s what made me want to help & start this business in the first place.

Now as a qualified career coach, I bring a level of insight and structure that most people simply don’t have access to.

I help my clients get to the heart of what drives them - we uncover their strengths, refine their positioning, and build a tailored, actionable path towards the role they really want.

Whether that’s progressing internally, pivoting into a new area, or preparing for roles they once thought were out of reach, we do it all in a way that feels authentic and aligned.

So, if you're serious about taking control of your career and forging a path towards your dream role, let’s talk.
